The gap between where you are and where you thought you'd be isn't evidence that you were wrong. It's evidence that you're doing something real.
You started with something clear. A vision that felt almost physical in its immediacy, not an abstraction or a vague direction, but a specific and vivid picture of what you were building and why it mattered. You could feel the pull of it. It was enough to make you take the first steps, even when the first steps were the most uncertain ones.
That was the easy part, in retrospect.
What nobody adequately prepares you for is what the middle feels like. Not the beginning, with its clarity and momentum. Not the end, with its vindication and perspective. The middle, which is where most of the time actually gets spent, and which bears almost no resemblance to either of the more photogenic phases.
The middle is where the gap lives. The gap between where you are and where you thought you'd be by now. Between the plan and the reality. Between the version of yourself you imagined doing this work and the version who's actually doing it, with all the uncertainty and exhaustion and second-guessing that the imagined version somehow didn't account for.
This is where a lot of important things end. Not with a dramatic failure, but with a quiet decision to stop. To call it a sensible reassessment. To conclude that the evidence of the past several months suggests you were wrong about what was possible.
I want to push back on that conclusion.
The temptation is to read the gap as diagnostic. If you were capable enough, you'd be further along. If the idea was right, it'd be working. If you had what it took, the evidence would be clearer by now.
But the gap is a feature of building things, not a measure of their validity. It exists for almost everyone who's done what you're trying to do. And it existed during exactly the parts of their stories that history leaves out, because the gap doesn't make for a compelling narrative. What gets told is the vision and the outcome. What gets left out is the long, grinding, uncertain middle where most of the actual work happened, and where the outcome was anything but clear.
The people who made it through didn't do so because they were more certain. Most of them will tell you honestly that they were uncertain for longer than was comfortable. They made it through because they stayed in motion, kept adjusting rather than stopping, and had people around them who could hold the conviction when their own supply ran low.
That last part is the one I want to stay on.
At the beginning, what you need is encouragement. Belief. Someone to say yes, this is worth trying. That's relatively easy to find when the idea is new and the energy is high.
In the middle, what you need is rarer and more specific. You need people who understand the difficulty from the inside, who've been in the gap themselves, and who can tell you honestly whether what you're experiencing is normal or whether something genuinely needs to change. You need people who won't dismiss your doubts or catastrophise them, who can hold both the difficulty and the possibility at the same time.
You also need people to celebrate the small things with. In the middle, the milestones are often invisible from outside. The decision that seemed minor but redirected everything. The conversation that unlocked something that had been stuck for months. The moment you finally understood a part of the problem you'd been misreading. These don't register as wins by external measures. But they are wins, and having people around you who recognise them as such makes a genuine difference to your capacity to keep going.
We love the launches. The wins. The moments when a Local hits a milestone and the whole room feels it. Those are genuinely some of our best days.
But this community is as much for the Tuesday mornings when it's hard. For the weeks when the numbers aren't moving and the energy is low and the question of whether this is going to work feels louder than usual. For the moments when you need to be around people who are still in it, still building, still choosing the uncertainty over the safety of the known.
We're not here to tell you it's easy. We're here to be in the room with you while you do the hard thing.
Rise above the known. The territory past the edge of the map is where the interesting work happens. And you're more capable of navigating it than you know right now.
